Website Traffic Rule #1 - Housekeeping!

As promised a couple of days ago, I am going to run a short series of basic traffic generation techniques and tactics over the next 8/10 days.

So, here’s the first tip - housekeeping!

Imagine that you invite someone that you don’t know so well, but someone that you really do want to get to know, to your house.

Do you make a bit of an effort for them?

Of course you do! Unless it was someone that knew you very well, if you were expecting any company, there are certain things you would probably do in advance.

You know the kind of thing - make sure that the place is clean, dirty underwear and socks picked up off the dining room table, that sort of thing!

More seriously, you’d definitely make sure that there were a few refreshments in the house, maybe prepare some snacks or even an entire meal.

You’d welcome them in, in other words.

Preparing your website should follow the same concept. Make sure that your site is ready to receive visitors before you invite them in.

No point in going to all of the effort to get them to come if they are going to leave within a split second because your site is messy or badly organized.

And it is not difficult.

All you need to do is to make sure that things are neat and tidy, pleasing on the eye.

For example, make sure that your navigation follows a logical sequence.

Make sure that you have plenty of good content, and that everything is spelled correctly.

Simple, basic stuff, I know, but screw up right from the start and you’ll always be fighting an uphill battle!
